Alright, so you say you’re in the market for a new toy, and it doesn’t need to be a daily driver. In fact, you’d prefer it exclusively for any and all weekend automotive activities. Now, you could go for a classic, maybe something American, Japanese- or you could go for something a little more race-y, if you catch my drift. Track cars- the ultimate automotive expression for the mostly more well-off enthusiasts. But there’s a lot to choose from. Companies now more than ever seem to be infusing this exclusive and important aspect into their lineup.
It’s an old dream of automotive designers: a true one-size-fits all vehicle that can be all things to all drivers. This ideal machine can haul heavy loads, climb rocks in the outback, take the kids to soccer practice, and even turn heads during a night on the town. And, like most ideals, it has proven easier to dream about than to achieve.
We here at BoldRide recently got a little testy regarding the ways in which Concours events are not all that they are cracked up to be, but let’s be serious- there is a reason that people attend these things in droves. This past weekend featured one of the key events on the automotive calendar; The Greenwich Concours d’Elegance. So good was this show, that we decided to take a look at the pros of Concours events.
Lest you forgot, we went down to the Magic City back in February to kick off the Nurotag 2KXIII series. But for round two, the fellas took the road north, calling the University of Central Florida home for the weekend.
On a day filled with beautiful rides, beautiful women, and more security than the goddamn White House- in the end, it turned out to be one pretty nifty event. Details? Who needs ‘em, just prepare to gawk over some of the most gorgeous rides we found.
Every year the Gumball 3000 presents some of the most gorgeously dressed supercars on the planet. This year- as all the festivities kicked off this past Saturday, May 18th- we were in for quite a show.
With the usual suspect Lamborghinis and Ferraris taking place, newer faces like Koenigsegg, McLaren and even a few custom built cars were in the lineup. We won’t waste time on details, but here’s some of the most radical rides from the 2013 Gumball 3000 lineup:
With all the hype over Tesla and similarly over Iron Man 3, it’s funny to look and think that Mr. Stark isn’t much more than an overpriced rich dude in a shiny suit with a take-no-shit sort of attitude. Sort of like Tesla founder Elon Musk.
What guy wouldn’t want to be Tony Stark? He gets paid to blow things up. He’s dating Gwyneth Paltrow. He seems to have more money than Bill Gates and Warren Buffet combined. And then there’s that metal suit.

Cataloging the “top auction cars sold” is a fool’s errand. It’s difficult to account for the vagaries of the market and money in general, making what sold for record money 10 years ago look like a relative bargain now. Taste also factors in. A few years back, Barrett-Jackson sold the Truppi-Kling 1970 Chevelle LS6 Convertible for $1.2 million, certainly a record for an LS6 at that point. At the depths of the economic downturn just two years later, that same car sold for $264,000, which was probably what it was worth in the first place.
