If you take a look back at the history of the S63 AMG, you’ll see that one of the most powerful AMG’s in the lineup, has never usually had the brash and robust appearance that plagues (or glorifies) most AMG-spec Mercedes’. The C63, the CLA45, the E63, even- all often sporting a few sharper angles and more irregularly placed LEDs than the central Tokyo.
The S63 has and always will be a bit more subtle. Beautiful, but subtle. And for 2014, that’s no exception. The wheels aren’t unnaturally flared, the front end isn’t overly-angular, and the backside isn’t much more complicated than a vanilla ice cream cone- although, those sharp quad exhausts might leave some 82-year-old men up in arms.
It’s all very simple, and it’s all very handsome. But aside from all these clean cut lines, comes something that every AMG should/does always have, a potent engine, this time in the form of a 577-hp, 5.5-liter Biturbo V8. All this paired to a curb weight that’s about 220 lbs (100 kg) lighter than previous, and a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of just about four seconds thanks to a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.
Other feisty features include a stiffer suspension, lightweight rims, carbon ceramic brakes (optional), and signature AMG stitching and badging throughout. All offset by an equally tame black leather interior.
So far, Mercedes hasn’t dished out all the details just yet on its all-new Benz. Expect a full release along with pricing closer to a debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
