The Z/28 was introduced into the Camaro lineup in the early 70s- and as they say, the rest is history. It soon became one of the most iconic and high performance muscle cars on the market. With early models sporting a more powerful 5.7L V8, the Z/28 was considered one of the first cars in the market to overtake the highly touted Ford Mustang.
One of our readers, Erick, wanted us to feature his gorgeous 1979 Camaro Z/28. The turquiose Chevy is a beautiful piece of American engineering indeed, but we’ll let him tell you about it some more.
BoldRide: How did you acquire your ride?
Erick: Well kind of a long story…first started out asking buddies if they knew of any Camaro’s for sale and by chance one did, six month’s later and it was a ”barn find”1968 sport coupe for $1,200.00 For some reason, I didn’t think much about it until a couple month’s later and had some extra “toy” money, so asked my buddy again, told him to offer the guy $750 and it was a deal- unreal I owned a 68 Camaro!!
Then, tore it down to the six bolts to pull the body off, she had issues…lots! I began to realize I wasn’t gonna have the kind of cash that car was gonna deserve to be put back together the right way, so put it on craigslist for $3,500 or trade for a driveable 79-80-81 Z/28 or Trans Am. Took four month’s and a hundred calls and a guy only forty miles away traded me for the car and $2,500 to boot!
What drew you to it when you bought it?
Fresh paint a couple years back, he said the interior was decent but needed a lot of tlc to get it where she is now. Pretty much the whole summer fixin this and that tryin different carbs, just couldn’t get it to quit fallin on her face when I put my foot on the gas. Then I bought a brand new Demon carb, hell yeah!
Does it have a name?
Been kickin it around to have somethin hand painted on the back of car, BEAT YA BLACK-N-BLUE!
What do you feel like when you drive it?
Felt like everybody was watchin’ me, Ha! Cause they did, hardly a gas station or wherever people always asked what year or nice car even had an older lady- mid-eighty’s maybe- ask me about what kind of car it was and how pretty it was. I told her while her other half was just walkin by payin no mind, herd me and stopped- and the look she gave him kind of gave it away that they used to have one when they were a lot younger. Looked to me they had “FUN” in their car too!
What you would change about your car, if anything?
If I were to change anything it’d be the motor, for numbers matchin an untouched motor, hate to wreck it. Would give anything for a stroker motor with a six-speed, that I think would have to be the ultimate ”daily driver” JK!
What have you done to make it a bolder ride?
Iv’e added a lot to it- couple extra leafs on each side to get rid of sag, all new front end, ball joints, bearings…etc, brakes, Edelbrock performer, Demon carb, supercoil, mickey thompson’s on front gotta burn bfg’s off back yet. Totally went through everything top to bottom, lots of little things; tint, painted all the trim, hood scoop and louvers all black and bought a Lebra for it, not much for the bra but sure made it on this car!
Super fun to drive so much that i bought another that i’m workin on currently! Gotta say, thank you guys for giving the opportunity to be featured on BOLD RIDE!
