Thank the Mazda gods. It looks like the utterly handsome new Mazda6 could be turned into a stripped down, hardcore Mazdaspeed6 in the very near future. This new report from Auto Express indicates that Mazda engineers are currently sculpting away at a less door-y version of their new 6 in order to compete with the Audi A5, among others.
This new coupe, with a range-topping engine, is what Mazda hopes will become their newest halo model moving into the future of the brand.
The original Mazdaspeed6 was introduced in 2006, and although it was only offered in the form of a sedan, it came with a 2.3L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine good for 257-hp mounted to an all-wheel drive system and a six-speed manual transmission. Essentially, the definition of a sports sedan. While we know now Mazda hopes to ditch the rear doors for the next-gen, it will most likely get the same treatment including all-wheel drive and somewhere near 260-hp.
Mazda has yet to officially confirm the Mazdaspeed6 for production. If built, expect the top range new sports coupe in the lineup by early 2014.
