Just days after MINI had announced their official retirement from the World Rally Championship, after less than a year, long time-contender Ford now says that their time in WRC up as well.
Since 2011, rumor had it that Ford Europe had been planning to pull the plug on the less-than-profitable WRC and their Ford Fiesta, although sticking it out for another year, it looks like a less than successful season overall may have done Ford Europe in for good.
Unlike MINI, Ford has been involved in the series for over 16 seasons and has had numerous successful championships with their Fiesta, Focus and Escort rally cars. Sitting atop the WRC bankroll as one of the most profitable teams, it looks like the WRC could be in for a bit of trouble going into the 2013 season.
Although officially pulling sponsorship from the event, Ford says that M-Sport, which ran the factory team, will still be provided with a new Fiesta R5 rally car for the 2013 season.
