To honor the 30th anniversary of the Mark II Scirocco GTS, Volkswagen unveiled their Scirocco GTS concept model for 2012. Displayed at the Auto Mobil International in Germany the new Scirocco pays homage to the GTS from way back in ’82.
Complete with classic hood-to-tailgate red and black racing stripes, the new GTS takes cues from the sporty racing style of the Mark II. Other features include subtle new side skirts, front and rear bumpers, body color side molding and painted side mirrors. A rear diffuser and roof spoiler are borrowed from the Scirroco R. From the waist down the GTS comes with glossy 18 inch “Thunder” alloy wheels complete with handsome GTI-like black trim and red accented brake calipers.
On the inside of the Scirocco is a pretty nice place to be. Black and red leather trim make up most of the interior with a host of “GTS” badges from the seat backs to the door sills providing more of that classic racing feel. Even the shift knob returns to the more rounded, golf ball styling of V-dubs from the 80s.
Although the new Scirocco glorifies the classic, this isn’t your dad’s GTS. Power comes from a 2.0L turbocharged engine good for 210-hp mounted to a six-speed manual transmission. With such little weight the engine provides a hefty amount of power to this tiny racer.
