The car you see before you is the Nissan DeltaWing. This spaceship-on-wheels is actually a collaboration between Don Panoz, Dan Gurney, and Nissan. Things you need to know: it has 300 horsepower, weighs only 1,100 pounds, is scheduled to race in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Top Gear boys love it.
Clarkson, May, and Hammond have expressed their love of the DeltaWing, which will run in the 24-hour endurance race as an experimental entrant. Now, the TopGear ‘gents can get their hands on pretty much any car they desire, but when said desired car is a one-of-a-kind and destined to run at Le Mans, it might be a little hard to book seat time. So they are building one of their own.
Jezza and the boys are constructing this knock-off with the help of UK fabricator Andy Saunders, but this one appears to have more of a salvage yard theme going on. Though the final design will resemble the Nissan prototype, it will be a road-going version, and won’t be taking to the track any time soon.
That doesn’t mean it can’t be AT the track, as the Top Gear crew intends to bring it along with them while they cover this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. A photo-op with racecar and homage-car is unlikely, but if anyone can do it, it’s the man who can piss off half of the UK and still manage to stay on the air. I suppose that’s why we love Clarkson.
