Jaw Dropper: Porsche 918 Spyder Prototype

The Porsche 918 Spyder dresses up for the cameras ahead of its official debut. The prototype you see here is the follow-up to the legendary Carrera GT. The gorgeous lines and hybrid power-train make this Porsche the closest competition Giselle Budchen has had since Angela Lindvall.

When Porsche introduced the Carrera GT back in 2003 it changed the sports car world forever. With the insane sounding 604 hp V-10, razor sharp handling and looks to kill, it was crazier than a Starbucks chugging housewife in a Volvo XC-90. But times have changed. We’re in the middle of an all-out horsepower war where 600 ponies is considered chump change. Ferrari claims its upcoming F12berlinetta will make 730 hp, while the Lamborghini Aventador already puts down a ludicrous 691 hp to all four wheels. Even station wagons are closing in on 600. Then there’s that whole global warming thing you might have heard about.

That hasn’t stopped the Zuffenhausen boys from whipping up a successor to the Carrera GT. The end result is the 759 hp 918 Spyder- the world’s first hybrid supercar. Powering the rear wheels is a 4.6 liter V8 revving to 9,000 rpm and electric motors on both axles. Altogether the all-wheel drive 918 Spyder weighs in at an athletic 3,300 lbs. Porsche claims the 918 should trim 10 seconds off the Carrera GT’s already quick 7m 32.24s Nürburgring time. Those are some impressive numbers that should help this eco-friendly supercar cut down on smug.

Though it is a cutting edge supercar, the 918 Spyder is a direct descendant of Porsche’s legendary race cars of the 60’s and 70’s. Styling cues are picked right out of the motorsports history book. Details like the exposed engine cover is a modern twist on the unobstructed engine fan from the Porsche 917. Other wild features include the exhausts which exit right behind the driver’s and passenger’s ears. Porsche always has reasons for being awesome, this time it’s to keep heat away from the batteries located behind the engine. The position of that exhaust will make the 918 Spyder a seriously exciting car to drive. This is one hybrid that should be sold with ear plugs.

Set to go into production in the fall of 2013, the 918 Spyder will make it to a few lucky US owners just in time for Christmas. Before then we expect to see this Frankenstein demolish the green-hell, and pretty much anything else thrown at it. If this is the future, we like it already.
