Today is Mother’s Day and Mom deserves the best. And no, we’re not talking about flowers or brunch. The cool moms might fall in love with Super Wagons. That’s right, the hot items this year (at least to us) are two tire shredding, hybrid gobbling rides from Mercedes-Benz and Cadillac. Sure, you could pick up a four-wheeled appliance with a bow on top and make her feel as confident as January Jones in a fat suit. But Mr. Perfect-Family-Man across the street already beat you to it. Two sensible options are the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate. Here’s how to go about finding that ultimate gift for mom.
1. Watch the above video
Until recently, the selection of fast wagons in the USA has been sparse at best. Of course, there was the Audi S4 Avant, some turbocharged offerings from Subaru, as well a handful of E55 AMG wagons that Mercedes-Benz brought stateside in 2005. But we’ve never had two wagons so closely matched as the E63 and CTS-V. Nevermind the fact that they have more horsepower and torque between them than a Bugatti Veyron.2. Compare
Consider that the E63 AMG Wagon is faster than the CTS-V Wagon in a straight line. However, chances are that the road to Costco is more Nürburgring than Autobahn. When Michael Prichinello drove the CTS-V Coupe back in March, he said the chassis was competent and precise enough to turn Lower Manhattan into a Formula Drift Circuit. You could probably do the same with the CTS-V Wagon at the cost of an egg or two. On the other hand, it’s pretty much guaranteed that you won’t see another E63 Wagon at soccer practice. There’s something understatedly seductive and menacing about the Mercedes. You should not be able to carry five people and all their stuff this quickly. It’s wrong, which is why she’ll love it.3. Purchase
When you bring the car home, as part of the surprise – do a standing burnout in front of the house while the kids make her breakfast. You know you want to.
